Overview
Since Nineteen Fifty-Eight
A small hotel and restaurant beside the water, at the edge of a national park.
Giethoorn is a village in Overijssel built along canals rather than streets, which means the traffic is boats and the bridges are wooden and arched. De Dames Van De Jonge sits directly on that water. Geesje started it in 1958 and her family still runs it, which is why the place reads as a house rather than a hotel. Rooms come in three registers — the traditional Basic rooms, the larger Comfort rooms, and the Farmhouse rooms — all with private bathrooms. There is a boat rental at the door, and the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, the largest peat marsh in northwestern Europe, starts just beyond the village.
Take a boat, not a car. The village is navigated by whisper boat rather than on foot. The hotel rents them from its own mooring, and early morning is when the canals are empty.
