Overview
Slow Safari, on the Talek
Ishara — Kiswahili for a sign, or symbol — is Kenyan entrepreneur Azhar Madhani's vision for the Mara: an ultra-luxury camp built to sit as lightly as possible on the land it occupies.
Reached by footbridge on the south bank of the Talek River, Ishara opened in 2022 inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve itself, styled in the camp's signature palette of muted terracottas, olive greens and creams. Ten suites — seven River Suites, two Family Suites and one two-bedroom Villa Suite — sit atop cantilevered platforms designed for minimal impact and maximum vantage, with most of the camp's food grown in its own aeroponic tower farm using a fraction of the water conventional farming requires.
Solar-powered and self-sufficient. Ishara's entire site runs on solar power, with a rainwater harvesting system that produces water four times cleaner than government guidelines, and a wildlife waterhole the camp itself created and maintains.
