Perched on a hilltop above a floodlit waterhole on the southern boundary of Etosha, Ongava Lodge is the original luxury address in one of Namibia's most important private rhino sanctuaries.

Overview
A Treehouse on the Ondundozonanandana
Started in the early 1990s, Ongava Lodge was the original luxury safari lodge near Etosha — and remains the most talked-about address in the reserve.
Ongava Lodge is built into the slopes of the Ondundozonanandana Hills within the privately-owned, 30,000-hectare Ongava Game Reserve, directly bordering Etosha National Park's southern boundary near Andersson's Gate. Fourteen rock-and-thatch chalets look out over an active, floodlit waterhole where elephant, rhino, lion and giraffe come to drink — often within view of the dining deck. Ongava is one of the few private reserves in southern Africa where both black and white rhino can reliably be seen, and its position gives guests the rare privilege of exploring both the quieter private reserve and the game-dense plains of Etosha itself.

On Foot
White Rhino Tracking
Approach Ongava's resident white rhino on foot with an armed guide — a privilege rarely offered so close to Etosha.
After Dark
Night Drives
Etosha closes its gates at sunset, but Ongava's private reserve allows night drives — the best chance to find leopard and aardwolf.

Location
The Southern Edge of Etosha
Ongava Lodge sits within the private Ongava Game Reserve, directly bordering Etosha National Park's southern boundary, in Namibia's north.
A fence separates the reserve from Etosha, but wildlife still moves between the two — expect regular crossovers of larger species.
Ongava holds one of the largest populations of black-faced impala outside Etosha, alongside healthy predator numbers.
The reserve was once farmland; three decades of rehabilitation have restored it to thriving bush habitat.
Private vehicles and night drives are only possible on Ongava — Etosha itself closes its gates from sunset to sunrise.
Fly
Scheduled light aircraft from Windhoek's Eros Airport land at Ongava's private airstrip, roughly 1.5 hours away.
Drive
A tarred road runs from Windhoek in about 5.5 hours; a 4WD is recommended in the wet season for the final gravel stretch.
Arrive
Check-in from 12:00, checkout by 10:00 — self-drive activities are not permitted within the private concession.
