Overview
Named for an Empress
Thirty-three rooms and eleven suites in a Venetian and Austrian landmark.
Palace Elisabeth is the first full-service five-star heritage hotel on Hvar, standing directly above the city hall and overlooking the main square — which is also the largest square in Dalmatia. The site’s history runs back to the 13th century and the residential complex of the Duke’s Palace; it mattered most under Venetian rule, when successive dukes each left their mark. In 1899 it was rebuilt as the Spa Hotel Empress Elisabeth, named for the Austrian Empress Sisi, whose travelling life the hotel still trades on.
Venetian and Austrian, in one facade. The building carries architectural detail from both periods of Hvar’s history, which is unusual even in Dalmatia and is the reason it reads as a landmark rather than a hotel.
