FLORIANA, OUTSIDE VALLETTA
Grand Hotel — Floriana

At the Gates
of Valletta

Malta’s first five-star hotel, built in 1947 outside the city walls, with seven acres of gardens running down to the bastions.

Overview

Since 1947,
Outside the Walls

A hundred and thirty-two rooms in seven acres of gardens, at the gates of a UNESCO capital.

The Phoenicia opened in 1947 as Malta’s first five-star hotel, positioned just outside the fortified walls of Valletta at Floriana — close enough to walk into the capital, far enough to have gardens. There are 132 rooms and suites, and the grounds run to around seven acres of mature planting that descend to the Bastion Pool, set against the fortification walls with panoramic views over Marsamxett Harbour. It is a Michelin Key holder, Forbes-rated and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

The pool is built into the bastions. At the far end of the gardens, the Bastion Pool sits nestled against the city’s fortification walls with the harbour laid out below — a swimming pool inside a 16th-century defensive system.
