Overview
From Granite Mine to Viral Fairyland
Wangxian Valley's cliffside village was rebuilt between 2015 and 2020 on the site of an abandoned granite mine, its homestays and restaurants staggered up a genuine 110-metre cliff face using traditional Gan architectural methods.
Rammed-earth walls, blue stone slabs and mortise-tenon joinery — classic building techniques from northeastern Jiangxi — were used to construct dwellings paying homage to the hermit traditions of Eastern Han dynasty Taoist monks, who once sought distraction-free enlightenment in vertical rock faces like this one. Opened on 31 January 2022, the cliff homestay offers over ten glass-walled guestrooms alongside cliffside restaurants and high-altitude viewing platforms built directly into the White Cliff. No two rooms are alike — some carry marble-walled decor for a more luxurious feel, others rustic wooden furniture reviving the simplicity of village life — but all share the same vertiginous outlook over the valley below and the Dragon's Back ridge in the distance.
A large complex, not a single small guesthouse. Despite the name suggesting a small bed-and-breakfast, this is a substantial hotel complex with rooms spread throughout the valley — worth knowing when planning where exactly to book.
