Overview
Wild, Open, Unlike the Rest of Bali
"When we first saw the site, we felt it was wild, open, dry and rough, and quite unlike the rest of Bali," said WOHA co-founder Richard Hassell of the limestone plateau his firm transformed into one of Indonesia's most awarded resorts.
Built mainly from locally sourced materials, including limestone quarried from the site itself and recycled railway sleepers, the resort's 64 villas and residences follow an environmentally sustainable framework drawing on Balinese and Majapahit architectural tradition, filtered through a distinctly modern lens. Flat lava rock roofs absorb heat and bamboo ceilings encourage natural airflow, reducing reliance on air conditioning across the property's open-plan pavilions. Every villa includes a private pool and 24-hour Villa Host service, while the resort's 25-metre cliff-edge infinity pool, floating at the edge of a 100-metre limestone drop to the Indian Ocean, remains one of the most photographed features in Balinese hospitality.
Indonesia's first EarthCheck-certified design. Alila Villas Uluwatu was the first resort in Indonesia to receive EarthCheck's highest Best Practice Building Planning and Design certification, reflecting its commitment to sustainability without compromising on design.
