Crater Rim Lodge — Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania
Maasai Meets Versailles
Three intimate camps of opulent, stilted suites perched on the rim of the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — often described as the most theatrical lodge address in Africa.

Overview
Perched on the Edge of the World
Set on the southern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater — the largest intact, inactive volcanic caldera on Earth — this is one of Africa's most theatrical and talked-about lodge addresses.
Divided into three independent camps — North, South and the more intimate, lower-set Tree Camp — the lodge blends stilted, handcrafted mud-and-thatch suites with opulent, almost European Empire interiors: crystal chandeliers, gilt mirrors, raw silk drapes and ball-and-claw bathtubs beneath banana-leaf ceilings. Below the rim, the crater floor holds around 27,000 large mammals, including roughly 16 black rhino and some 70 lions, alongside vast wildebeest herds and the elegant flamingos that crowd its soda lake.
Currently closed for rebuild. &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is closed for an extensive rebuild that will redefine the property, with reopening planned for 2027. Please confirm current availability directly with &Beyond before booking.

Location
The Rim of the World’s Largest Caldera
The lodge sits on the southwest rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, overlooking the Lerai Forest and Lake Magadi on the crater floor below.
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s Seven Wonders, formed nearly 3 million years ago when an ancient volcano collapsed on itself.
The crater floor can experience heavy vehicle traffic during peak months (July–September, and the Christmas/New Year period).
No off-road driving is permitted on the crater floor, and access is restricted to daylight hours only.
Over 60,000 indigenous trees have been planted around the lodge over the past 20 years as part of ongoing forest rehabilitation.
Fly
Scheduled flights from Arusha land at Lake Manyara Airstrip, roughly 1.5 hours from the lodge.
Drive
Guests are collected from the airstrip in wildlife-viewing vehicles for the overland transfer to the crater rim.
Status
The lodge is currently closed for a full rebuild, with reopening planned for 2027 — confirm current status before booking.
