Overview
Nests Among the Volcanoes
Since opening in 2017, Bisate has collected 34 international design and hospitality awards — and remains the most talked-about lodge in East Africa.
Bisate Lodge sits within the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone at the foot of the Virungas, within walking distance of Volcanoes National Park — home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Its six forest villas, built to evoke giant birds' nests, draw on ihumure, traditional Rwandan royal architecture, and sit on a hillside reforested by the lodge itself: over 46,000 indigenous trees planted since 2017 as part of one of Africa's most visionary conservation programmes. Owned and run by Wilderness, Bisate sits at the very top of the group's property tier, with rates fully inclusive of meals, drinks, laundry and most on-site activities.
A more exclusive sister property. Wilderness Bisate Reserve, four private villas hidden nearby, offers an even more secluded version of the same experience — every excursion privately guided with no other guests. This page covers Bisate Lodge itself.

Location
On the Edge of Volcanoes National Park
Bisate Lodge sits on the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda, near the town of Ruhengeri (Musanze), within a natural amphitheatre of volcanic hills.
Volcanoes National Park protects roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population, alongside golden monkeys and over 200 bird species.
The lodge is built into a hillside formed by an eroded volcanic cone, giving every villa uninterrupted views of Bisoke, Karisimbi and Mikeno.
Bisate's Kwanda day lounge is Rwanda's first of its kind, allowing guests a comfortable late check-out after a final morning trek.
Children over six are welcome at the lodge, though gorilla treks themselves are restricted to guests aged 15 and over.
Fly
Helicopter transfers from Kigali reach Bisate’s helipad in around 30 minutes, a five-minute drive from the lodge.
