Spain’s regions are genuinely different from one another — different languages, different architecture, different food, and in some cases different centuries. Madrid is a capital of art and late dinners, home to the Prado and one of the most important collections of European painting anywhere. Andalusia carries eight hundred years of Moorish rule in its buildings; the Royal Alcázar in Seville is Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance and Mudéjar work layered into a single palace still used by the royal family.
Catalonia produced Antoni Gaudí, whose Sagrada Família has been under construction since 1882 and is expected to complete in 2026, a century after his death. And the Balearics have shifted, faster than their reputation suggests, from a nightlife shorthand into a serious wellness and food destination with UNESCO-listed fortifications and coves reachable only by boat.
At Finders & Keepers Safaris we travel Spain on AVE high-speed rail at up to 320 km/h, with licensed guides and timed entries for everything that needs one. We also plan around the heat — Andalusia in August is genuinely punishing, and the difference between a good Seville day and a bad one is often just what time you started.

Beside the Cathedral, Seville
Built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition and inaugurated a year early to coincide with a royal engagement, the Alfonso XIII was designed to show visitors what Andalusia was. It fuses Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance work into one building, and the result is the most historically significant grand hotel in the region.
The central columned courtyard is the image of the place — orange trees, mosaic fountains, and tiled arcades that keep the heat out the way Andalusian architecture has always done. The San Fernando restaurant sits inside it, and the Ena terrace, named for Queen Victoria Eugenia’s familiar name, handles tapas and cocktails in a more contemporary register.
It stands a few steps from the cathedral and the Royal Alcázar, which is close to unbeatable as a base, and the hotel functions as a kind of civic memory — the long list of personalities who have stayed here is part of Seville’s own story.
