Japan is a study in contrasts held in perfect balance — a country where centuries-old ritual and cutting-edge innovation coexist not as competing forces, but as complementary expressions of the same exacting attention to detail. From the neon density of Tokyo to the temple gardens of Kyoto, every layer of Japanese life reflects a devotion to craft and precision.
Kyoto remains the spiritual heart of the country, its thousands of temples and shrines including the vermillion gates of Fushimi Inari and the golden reflection of Kinkaku-ji. Tokyo offers an entirely different rhythm — the world's most punctual transit system, Michelin-starred ramen counters, and the quiet calm of the Meiji Shrine just steps from Shibuya's crossing. Beyond the cities, the snow monkeys of Nagano, the deer of Nara, and the bullet trains that connect them all reveal a country that has mastered the art of moving fast while staying deeply rooted.
At Finders & Keepers Safaris, we design Japan journeys around this balance — temple mornings and neon evenings, bullet-train efficiency and ryokan stillness — so that every traveler experiences both the precision and the poetry that define this extraordinary country.

West of Kongobu-ji, Mount Koya
Soji-in’s roots reach back to the Heian era, and it sits just west of Kongobu-ji, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism. It has welcomed overnight guests since 1994, but it remains first and foremost a place of worship — which is exactly what makes a night here different from anywhere else in Japan.
Rooms are Japanese in style, with tatami floors, futon bedding and views over the temple’s own garden. Unusually for Koyasan’s shukubo, every room has a private Western-style toilet, and some add a private bath and air conditioning. Dinner and breakfast are shojin ryori — the vegetarian temple cuisine developed by monks over centuries, built without meat, fish, onion or garlic and yet extraordinarily varied — brought to your room by a member of the temple.
From around six each morning, guests are welcome to join the monks for chanted sutras in the main hall. Repeat visitors tend to describe that half hour as the reason they came back to Mount Koya at all. Afterwards there is Okuno-in, Japan’s largest cemetery, and the moss-covered forest path that runs through 200,000 memorials to reach it.
