runs out, and the bush begins.

At the top end sit the private-villa camps and exclusive-use properties — Segera, Malori, Singita Milele — where you book the entire lodge, staff included, and the only other guests are the people you arrived with. Just below that are the classic luxury tented camps: en-suite bathrooms, a proper bed, hot bucket showers or plumbed hot water, and a mess tent for dinner, all inside a private concession where the game drives don't share the road with anyone else's vehicle.

Further along the range are the safari lodges proper — permanent thatch-and-stone suites, often with a plunge pool and a viewing deck, in reserves shared with a small number of other camps rather than exclusive-use. And at the more relaxed end are the eco-lodges, tea estate cottages and beach bandas: simpler, gentler on the budget, but still chosen for a genuinely special piece of land rather than a convenient one.

What every property in this collection shares, whatever its level, is a guide, a location, and a design that could not be picked up and dropped somewhere else. A room is only ever half the reason to stay.
